Abstract

In order to study the effect of low molecular weight PAHs air pollution on the internal exposure levels of children, the study selected two groups of children to collect the urine samples in three days. One group (n=80) in polluted area were from an elementary school situated adjacent to a petrochemical enterprises in southern China, and the other group (n=80) in controlled area were from an elementary school situated in unwind area of 15km. The effect of petrochemical enterprises pollution on children internal exposure and the temporal variability of the internal exposure was investigated. The results suggested that: In three days, the geometric mean of the OHPAHs concentrations in children of polluted area were slightly higher than those of controlled area with significant effect (P<0.05), which were 0.04~4.00μg/g and 0.06~5.09μg/g, respectively. The constituent characteristics of OHPAHs were expressed as ΣOHNap> ΣOHPhe> ΣOHFlu> ΣOHPyr, except for that of polluted area on the second day. Significant correlations were exist between all OHPAHs only on the third day of the polluted area (P<0.01, R2=0.74~0.97) and the correlations of OHPAHs in the samples of polluted area were better than those of controlled area. There were significant correlation between 1-OHP and other OHPAHs only on the third day of polluted area (P<0.01, R2=0.82~0.95).
