Abstract

Nowadays, it is undeniable that technology is developing in all areas of life, including the energy sector. The transition from fossil energy to electrical energy is one of the trends in technological development. Electrical energy cannot be separated from the development of batteries, which are currently generally lithium-based batteries. However, Indonesia does not have lithium reserves, so innovation is needed, one of which is aluminum-air batteries. This research will discuss the performance of aluminum-air batteries through simulation software, namely COMSOL Multiphysics 6.1. In general, the stages carried out in this research are making a metal-air battery model based on previous research, followed by simulating aluminum-air batteries using a validated model. The purpose of this research is to see the battery performance in terms of cell potential (V), and battery life. The variables used in this simulation include applied current density (mA/cm2), oxygen solubility, cathode porosity, and anode thickness. Based on the research conducted, all variables used have an influence on the performance of the battery itself. The greater the applied current density, the smaller the cell voltage and discharge time. The higher oxygen solubility and cathode porosity, the cell voltage and discharge time will also increase. The thicker the anode, the cell voltage and discharge time will also increase.
