Abstract

Majene is a seismically active area that stretches from the west Coast of West Sulawesi to Mandar, making it prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Tsunami events are also unpredictable. However, the community can be better prepared to face a tsunami disaster. The coastal defence system, in the form of mangrove vegetation paths, is a highly effective protection fortress. Mangrove forests with a thickness of 600 m to 1 km can absorb around 80% of tsunami waves up to a run-up height of 10 m. This research aims to determine the density of mangroves on the Coast of Majene in reducing and protecting coastal areas from tsunami wave energy. The method employed in this research is the observation method, utilizing Landsat 8 satellite imagery. Based on the research results, three districts with coastal areas not covered by mangroves were identified, namely the subdistricts of Banggae, Tammeroddo Sendana, and Ulumanda. The length of the coastline of Majene Regency is 116.83 km, with a length of coastline covered by mangroves of 11.23 km and not covered by mangroves of 105.6 km. The total area of mangroves on the Coast of Majene Regency is 701.702,378
