Abstract

Structures are in general fabricated with thin plates, and are stiffened with stiffeners to increase their stiffness and strength. In ship and offshore structures, flat-bars, angle-bars, tee-bars and bulb flat-bars are generally used as stiffeners. For these stiffened plates, the effect of stiffeners to increase local bucking strength is well analysed and simple formulas are proposed to represent the effect of stiffeners. On the other hand, U-beam stiffeners are sometimes used in other structures such as bridges. However, they have become used also in ship and offshore structures recently. For example, U-beam stiffeners are now used in hatch covers of bulk carriers. In the present paper, characteristics of U-beam stiffeners are examined from the viewpoint of local buckling of stiffened plates based on the results of numerical calculation applying nonlinear FEM.
