Composite maps of surface pressure and geopotential to predict extreme high temperature in Surabaya

Abstract

Surabaya is a highly active city with many weather dependent activities. The weather condition is a vital component to ensure that the daily business will be able to be run normally. Extreme high temperature is one of the events that has direct impact to the society, in particular of water supply management. To deal with this, accurate information about the events is required in order to reduce the risk. One of the ways is by developing tools which consist of information required to predict the weather condition. This paper proposes the development of composite maps to predict extreme high temperature in Surabaya with high resolution. The extreme high temperature is defined as maximum temperature above 36 degrees happening at three consecutive days. The composite maps are developed for surface pressure and geopotential variables. Using bootstrap to test the significant level in certain regions, the composite maps are capable to provide clear information about the meteorological pattern on one and two days prior to the occurence of extreme high temperature in Surabaya.
