Abstract

The government of Indonesia is considering to build an inter-island bridge across the Sunda Strait located between Java and Sumatra. This initiative was triggered by a need to accelerate regional development in Sumatra, and the poor performance of the present ferry service. This paper attempts to develop a concept selection approach to inter-island transport system using a topology approach. A risk-based and techno-economic approaches to concept selection are also presented. We concluded that an advanced ferry system is superior to a bridge system.
