N2 - The research aims to compare the governance of renewable energy and the market structure of various countries based on one of the sustainable development indicators, namely the Human Development Index (HDI) and Ecological Footprint (EF). This research uses a cross-country comparative study of previous studies that have discussed governance and market structure in developing renewable energy for electricity supply. The research found that the market structure and business model in the countries studied have a major influence on changes in sustainable development on the issue of renewable energy and electricity. The six countries are showing serious interest in developing renewable energy; regulatory constraints and investment availability are the main challenges. In the last two decades, the countries studied have shown significant differences in business models and market structure changes in the electricity system. From its beginning in the form of an absolute monopoly by the state, it has shifted to become more open and even liberal. Liberalization of electricity increased aggregate economic growth, and several countries recorded high carbon footprint values.
