Abstract

I am designing a prototype of a rice drying machine using a PID automatic control system. The prototype made has overall dimensions of 45 cm x 45 cm x 110 cm. The design of the rice dryer is a vertical type with a screw stirrer inside. The automatic control system of this dryer uses several sensors and actuators. The sensors used include temperature, humidity, moisture content, and load cell. The actuators used are in the form of blowers, heaters, and DC motors as the driving force of the screw. The control system uses the concept of a feedback control system, where the temperature sensor will act as feedback. The difference in signal from sensor will be used as input for controller, which will determine the output blower's speed. The PID parameter values used in this controlling machine are Kp 225,2, Ki 0,22, and Kd -0.00087. Then a comparison of the decrease in water content from the drying process was carried out using a prototype dryer and conventional methods. Obtained the results for testing using a setpoint variation of 45°C, 50°C, and 55°C, where the initial water content value is 19.2% with the same mass of 1000 grams. The results obtained to reduce the water content become 14% with temperature variations of 45°C, 50°C, and 55°C takes 120, 90, and 70 minutes. In comparison, the conventional method takes 140 minutes.
