Abstract

This paper presents a Franklin dual-mode (on-body and off-body) microstrip antenna for a wearable device for 5G application. The on-body mode adds three-layer structures, skin, fat, and muscle, into the antenna, while the off-body mode does not add a body layer. Design results at the 28 GHz show that the proposed antenna has 8.54 GHz wide impedance bandwidth, a gain of 10.4 dBi, and a compact size with a length of 68 mm and a width of 22 mm. The proposed Franklin microstrip antenna exhibits performance when placed on the human body due to good bandwidth, gain, and radiation pattern. This Franklin antenna makes it a good candidate for wearable applications.
