Abstract

Leachate landfill management poses significant environmental challenges due to its complex composition and potential for water resource contamination. Coagulation-based physical/chemical treatments, particularly those using Polyferric Sulphate (PFS), have emerged as effective solutions. This study investigates the influence of Copperas concentration on the properties and performance of PFS as a coagulant for leachate pre-treatment. PFS was synthesized through the partial neutralization of ferrous sulphate with varying Copperas concentrations and characterized using XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques. Jar tests evaluated the coagulant's performance in terms of dosage, pH, and stirring speed. PFS synthesized with 1.0 M Copperas concentration exhibited optimal removal efficiency at a dosage of 2500 ppm, pH 8, and 200 rpm, achieving significant color reduction and COD removal. These results demonstrate the potential of PFS as a cost-effective and efficient coagulant for leachate and wastewater treatment, highlighting its viability for broader environmental applications.
