Energy Retrofit of Commercial Building with the Utilization of Double Skin Facades

Abstract

A method of energy conservation could be used to reduce the energy consumption of a restaurant building, leading to a cost benefit at last for the user who implements this feature. Simpang Raya Restaurant in Surabaya is constructed to have an east faced VIP room which was exposed by direct sunlight therefore creating a hot and humid temperature within the room. There are several ways to reduce energy consumption while increasing thermal comfort all at once. Retrofitting through Double Skin Facades (DSF) are expected to lower the temperature with a significant amount. Two types of DSF used in the simulation includes Stagnant air DSF which traps the air within the cavity gap and Multi-Storey DSF which have an air flow within the cavity gap. Through the simulation conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics software, Multi-Storey DSF has a significant temperature reduction up to 4,85 ℃. Multi-Storey DSF can reach thermal comfort according to ASHRAE 55-2020 without the usage of air conditioner, which could save the operational cost for the restaurant building. Through the Cost-Benefit analysis, the restaurant could have the payback period within 8 months prior to the DSF installation and save up to Rp. 2.369.068.058 15th year benefit with the cost-benefit ratio at 11,00 priors installing DSF.
