Enhancing English Students' Writing Skills with Technology Tools: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

The advancement of technology has an impact on teaching, including English writing. This study explores students' points of view about the impact of technology tools development on their writing skills. This study used qualitative methodology by using questionnaires and interviews. This study engaged students in a higher education of Islamic University in Indonesia consisting of 50 English students. The findings showed that technology tools developments positively and negatively impact students' writing skills. This study highlights the positive impacts of technology tools developments on students' writing skills, which are improving students' writing quality, gaining vocabulary knowledge, and identifying errors more easily. Besides, this study underlined that the negative impacts of technology tools developments on students' writing skills are laziness and overreliance. Students thought that technology tools did all the writing assignments, which hampered their writing skills. Further, this study highlights that students can enhance their writing skills based on the good impact and avoid the bad impact. By understanding the impact of technology tools development, this study highlights the necessity to have the proper guidance using technology in supporting students' writing skills.
