Abstract
This study examines the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve waste management in Kenya's informal settlements. Despite the promise of smart bins, RFID, and low-power networks, their implementation in areas like Kibera and Mathare often falls short of addressing local challenges. Reporting followed the PRISMA 2020 guideline and checklist to ensure transparency and completeness of the systematic literature review of 36 peer-reviewed studies from 2019 to 2025. This research reveals key barriers such as unreliable infrastructure, digital exclusion, and policy gaps that hinder sustainable adoption. Addressing a gap in existing literature, the study proposes a holistic evaluation framework integrating technical readiness, community trust, and policy alignment to assess the feasibility of IoT systems in slum contexts. This is done while borrowing from the TAM and DOI theories. The approach aims to help policymakers, technologists, and urban planners design context-sensitive, inclusive solutions that advance Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 11. Although Kenya serves as our main focus, we triangulate our findings using similar data from Sub-Saharan Africa and other low- and middle-income contexts to improve generalizability and underscore contextspecific variations.
