Abstract

Scholars point out that personal information on the internet carries many risks. This study explores the elements that impact a person's motive to disclose personal information on social media. We used the Partial Least Square (PLS) method based on Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze data collected from 303 social media users. This study reveals that general information security awareness (ISA), which consists of general information security awareness (GISA) and personal information protection knowledge (PIPK), have a significant relationship to information security self-control (ISSC). Furthermore, self-control can act as a mediator between the ISA and the intention to disclose personal information. Surprisingly, information security self-efficacy (ISSE) cannot act as a mediator between the ISA and the intention to disclose personal information.
