Abstract

Marine fisheries in developing countries like Indonesia involve many small fishing vessels, which become the backbone of economic activities in fishing villages and the livelihood of small fishermen. We present the development of new methods and algorithms for inserting a new message type into AIS transmission packets to deliver information on potential fish locations to the small fishing ships. The scheme is applied to the AIS class B system by putting the information onto the presently unused, we called Message-33. We have now successfully applied this technology to an AIS class- B system, where messages-33 have been successfully sent and received by the AIS Transceiver device. Data from Message-33 has also been successfully displayed to the monitor device. Thus, if fishermen can receive this message-33 information, then the information can be used by fishermen to guide them to fishing locations. We hope that this fishing information feature on their boats can help fishermen to increase their fishing capacity.
