Abstract

This study aims to understand how firms achieve their international performance, whether the performance is a result of the firms' strategic choice or because of environmental pressure on the firms' operations. A self administered survey involving high and low internationalised industries in New Zealand and Indonesia was conducted. Using strategic choice and environmental determinism framework, the findings show that choice and determinism influence the firm's international performance differently. Country differences controls the firm's behaviour. International performance of Indonesian firms is mainly driven by the firm's strategic choice, while New Zealand firms' performance is determined by environmental determinism. Some suggestions for managing international operations are discussed.
