Abstract

The incidence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) from animal origin is increasing and become an increasingly important health problem globally. Epidemiological studies for ESBL produced by E. coli in dairy cows are still incomplete.Therefore, objective of this study was to determine the occurrence of ESBL producing E. coli. A total of 65 rectal swab samples of dairy cows from Surabaya farms area. The results showed that all samples totaling 65 were positive for Escherica coli, shown through EMBA isolation media. The isolates can be identified using the indole test. To confirm the ESBL in this study used the Double Disc Synergy Test (DDST). Betalactam antibiotic disk namely Amoxicylyn-clavulanate, Ceftazidime and Cefotaxime were used for DDST. Vitek-2 was used for confirmation ESBL producing E. coli. The presence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli bacteria isolated from rectal swabs of dairy cows in Surabaya was 4.61% (3/65). It can be concluded that dairy cows can be potential as reservoir for spreading ESBL isolates to human health.
