Marine litter characterization on the eastern coast of Surabaya city, East Java, Indonesia: Case study of cumpat beach and Kenjeran beach

Abstract

The problem of marine litter has become a national and international issue. Indonesia is declared as the second largest country after China in donating plastic waste in the ocean. Indonesia has a coastline of 47.4 Km2 which is mostly surrounded by settlements and domestic activities. Surabaya is one of the cities in Indonesia that has high potential as a city with large marine waste producers. Therefore, it is necessary to compile a Surabaya marine litter baseline with a coastal survey method as a reference for stakeholders to take action in reducing waste in upstream and downstream sources. The survey is conducted in two places on the East coast of Surabaya, including Cumpat Beach and Kenjeran Beach. The results of the study show that the dominant type of marine waste found on Cumpat Beach are Meso-debris including building materials, fabric, and various types of plastic waste; as Macro-debris were fabric, rubber, and various types of plastic waste. Meanwhile, the dominant type of marine waste found on Kenjeran Beach are also Meso-debris including metal hook, strings and other various types of plastic waste; as Macro-debris were strings, other various types of plastic waste and fabric.
