Abstract

The increasing penetration of photovoltaic and wind generation makes distribution system operation more time-varying and uncertain, so a fixed feeder topology may no longer provide adequate loss reduction and voltage security throughout the day. This paper proposes a 24-hour distribution system reconfiguration framework based on Quantum Binary Particle Swarm Optimization to determine hourly radial switching configurations under varying load, photovoltaic, and wind profiles. The optimization problem is formulated to minimize active power loss while satisfying voltage, current, and radiality constraints. A voltage stability index is also incorporated into the fitness evaluation so that each selected topology is assessed not only from an efficiency perspective but also from a security perspective. The proposed method is tested on a 39-bus radial distribution system equipped with three photovoltaic units and three wind turbine units. The simulation results show that the proposed reconfiguration strategy improves the daily operating condition compared with the unreconfigured base case. Under the most critical condition at Hour 19, the minimum bus voltage increases from 0.85172 per unit to 0.9098 per unit, while active power loss decreases from 2991 kilowatts to 2185.5 kilowatts. The results indicate that the proposed method can provide an adaptive and stability-aware reconfiguration strategy for renewable-integrated distribution networks.
