Abstract
This chapter delves into the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women microentrepreneurs in Surabaya, Indonesia, particularly emphasising the role of informal borrowing and the impact of a growth mindset on business performance during economic upheavals. In a context where almost half the adult population is unbanked and formal financial resources are scarce, these entrepreneurs often rely on informal borrowing from personal networks. This research explores how a growth mindset can influence entrepreneurial outcomes, especially in environments with limited formal financial access. Data from 321 women microentrepreneurs in Surabaya reveal a significant positive relationship between informal borrowing and a growth mindset as well as between a growth mindset and sales performance. The findings highlight the importance of nurturing a growth mindset in enhancing business success and resilience among women entrepreneurs in challenging economic environments.
