Abstract

Wave Energy Converter (WEC) type two body point absorber (TBPA) is a development of a single point absorber which researchers are now optimizing. The Powerbuoy and Wavebob companies are developing research on TBPA and looking at the variables that affect the power generated. One of the influential variables is the damping which is related to the drag coefficient (Cd) value. This study wants to observe and determine which shape of the submerged body damper plate has the smallest Cd value. This study used 3 variations of the shape: modification 1, modification 2, and modification 3 of the damping plate. Then the three variations be compared with the initial model made by previous research. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) were used for Cd analysis. The results obtained from the study in modification 1 reduced the Cd value by 68% from the initial value. While modifications 2 and 3 reduce Cd by 45%.
