Abstract

To investigate the performance of a centrifugal pump impeller, numerical simulation and experiment were performed in this study. The backward impeller has six single-curvature vane with an inner and outer diameter of 40 mm and 120 mm, respectively, and an outlet angle β2 of 170°. The studies were performed on three rotational speeds, i.e. 1050 rpm, 1200 rpm, and 1350 rpm, each with varying flow rate. Numerical RANS simulation results are compared to experiments. The 2D simulations are unable to represents the flow correctly. The 3D simulations show comparable results to experiments although the discrepancy increases with increasing flow rate and rotational speed. The numerical simulation tends to overpredict circulation and secondary losses which results in lower head and water horse power compared to experiments.
