Abstract

Silica-coated magnetite nanofluids have been successfully synthesized by an electrochemical method using an alternating monopolar configuration (AM). The silica-coated magnetite nanofluid was synthesized by a one-step method where sodium silicate as the silica source and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the stabilizer were added in the electrolyte during the electrosynthesis. Sodium sulfate was added as the supporting electrolyte for some experiments to understand its effect on the nanoparticle formation. The particles were characterized using XRD, FTIR, and TEM. The stability of nanofluid was determined by measuring the sedimentation rate under gravity. The XRD patterns of dried samples showed they had mainly magnetite phase and the change of voltage had no effect the crystalline phase. Although silica could not be observed from the XRD, it appeared in the band of FTIR spectra. In addition, spherical-like silica coating on magnetite nanoparticles also could be observed from the TEM images. The results showed that silica-coated magnetite nanofluids stabilized by PEG could be formed using the sodium sulfate as the supporting electrolyte. The stable nanofluid produced at 2 V with a sedimentation rate of approximately 0.42 mL/min.
