Abstract

The growth in electrical demand requires more generating units in the power system. The advanced technology of gas-fired units would increase their usage as one of the alternatives to meet the demand. However, the natural gas consumption rates of these units could affect the safety and reliability of gas transmission. Thus, it is necessary to have optimal coordination between the interdependence of electrical power and natural gas system. Energy storage (ES) availability is also considered to improve operational cost efficiency. This paper aims to analyze the energy storage integration in the optimal power and natural gas flow (OPNGF) model based on nonlinear programming (NLP). The objective function of optimization is to minimize the total operating cost. A non-linear model is used to represent the power flow as well as gas flow through a pipeline. Simulations are carried out on a 9-bus power system and 8-node natural gas system using IPOPT solver. Finally, the results show that the integration of energy storage benefits the total operating cost of the system.
