Abstract
Nowadays, the electrical power demand on the distribution system had significantly increased, which caused huge power losses. Moreover, the utilization of Distributed Generation (DG) with Renewable Energy Sources (RES) helped in reducing power losses but imposed uncertainties into the system. Distribution network reconfiguration was needed as a viable solution to mitigate this situation. This paper demonstrated the utilization of Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) for distribution network reconfiguration. The distribution network was modified from the IEEE 69-bus system with the integration of DG consisting of Photovoltaic (PV) systems. Voltage Stability Index (VSI) and power losses equations were formulated to assess the state of the distribution network. The distribution network reconfiguration significantly reduced the active power losses by 74.015% and reactive power losses by 25.93%. The minimum Voltage Stability Index (VSI) was improved from 0.412 p.u. to 0.733 p.u. Additionally, the minimum voltage of the system was increased from 0.801 p.u. to 0.925 p.u.
