N2 - —The stability of the Suralaya coal-fired power plant (“Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Uap” (PLTU) Suralaya), one of the biggest in Southeast Asia within Indonesia’s large-scaled Java-Madura-Bali (JAMALI) electrical system, is critical to ensure reliable operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimal tuning of a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) using the Chameleon Swarm Algorithm (CSA) for PLTU Suralaya. To focus on generator dynamics, PLTU Suralaya is modeled as a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system, thereby eliminating external electrical network influences. Simulations were conducted under small and sudden load changes. The CSA-tuned PSS presented a better damping performance than without PSS, it reduced overshoot by 31.89%, 42.51%, 36.09%, 56.94%, and undershoot by 91.69%, 97.26%, 98.19%, 94.09% across the performance indices of ITAE, ITSE, IAE, and ISE, respectively. Among these indices, ITAE and IAE resulted in faster settling times. Overall, these results confirm that CSA is highly suitable for practical PSS tuning applications.
