Optimisation of bio-medical optical waveguide

Abstract

This paper presents an optical waveguide with freestanding structure to detect the anastomosis leakage after colon surgery. Different parameters of the waveguide is investigated and two materials (SiC and TiO2) are chosen as the core. Simulations have been performed to optimise the structure and compare the difference in error tolerance and sensitivity between two materials. Waveguide with TiO2 core was fabricated and tested. The experimental results showed the sensitivity of the sensor S = 1 dB/%.
