abstract = "In this study, chitosan phthaloyl were introduced as matrices to improve the conductivity of membrane based on novel proton channelled by phthaloyl groups. The addition of phthaloyl groups was reduced methanol crossover and increased hydrophobic properties. Phthaloyl chitosan has been synthesized through reaction of chitosan with phthalic anhydride at 130°C in dimethylformamide and a presence of nitrogen gas. The FTIR spectra revealed distinctive differences in the chemical composition of chitosan phthaloyl in the region 1774 and 1710 cm-1 showing phthalate ester peak. Membranes were synthesized by applying the evaporation solvent method. Mechanical properties, methanol crossover, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and proton conductivity of composite membrane were characterized. The lowest methanol crossover showed with addition of 10% (w/w) chitosan phthaloyl as 0.107 × 104 cm2/s due to their hydrophobic properties. This membrane has lower conductivity (0.32 × 10 -3 S cm -1) than Nafion (8.4 × 10-2 S cm- 1).",
