Abstract

This paper presents an initial dilution model which incorporates uncertainties, not only from model inputs but also from the model's parameters. The model is derived based on existing outfall data, which are obtained from the Hollywood and Broward outfalls located on the east coast of South Florida. The proposed model is validated for the case of buoyant jet in a range of H/l(b) from 0.04 to 5.0. The paper also discusses how the model may be used in reliability-based design of an ocean outfall. The second moment method is used in the reliability analysis, and applicable formula is presented in a case study. A comparison between the proposed model and existing initial dilution models is also made in this paper.
