Research Mapping in Research Organizations Based on Abstracts of Scientific Publications using BERTopic Modeling

Abstract

The Research Organization for Aeronautics and Space (ORPA) has an essential role in the research and development of space technology in Indonesia. The research map presents research topics in an organization and reviews the development of each topic in a certain period. This paper uses BERTopic modeling to map research topics against 1107 scientific publications from the Scopus database. Using BERT embedding and c-TF-IDF, BERTopic produces topics consisting of essential terms or words scattered in the abstracts of scientific publications. We also include research summaries from each research center in the processed document to make it easier to trace research topics according to the research centers in the organization. Based on the evaluation results using coherence values and considering the topic's relevance to the analysis needs, we get 29 topics. The topics obtained are related to satellite technology (3 topics), aeronautics technology (3 topics), rocket technology (1 topic), space science (10 topics), and remote sensing (12 topics). These results help organizations make more precise and efficient decisions in forming research groups according to their expertise based on the research topics of interest.
