Abstract
This study aims to leverage the Reverse Cycle Strategy (RCS) with 10R principles to identify the circular potential of sugar mills achieving sustainability enhancement. This study uses the East Java sugar mill with the highest national production volume as a circular innovation foresight. Using qualitative methods, the study combined semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders in the sugar industry. The findings reveal that although some of the 10R principles are already in place, there is still significant room for further implementation. Some essential innovations identified include using automated sensors for predictive maintenance, using sugarcane waste to produce paper and organic fertilizers, and reducing fossil fuel use by integrating solar power. These strategies promise significant improvements in operational efficiency and environmental impact. The practical implications suggest that incremental adoption of these innovations, supported by initial investment and long-term benefits, can transform industries. Social implications include potential benefits to local communities and consumers through job creation and improved environmental quality. The authenticity of the study lies in a comprehensive examination of all RCS in one industry, providing a holistic approach to circular economy practices in the sugar sector. The study contributes to academic literature and practical policymaking, supporting a shift towards a more circular and sustainable industrial model.
