Abstract

The problem of lack of clean water is still something that must be considered. There are many methods for the desalination of seawater into freshwater. However, the constraints of costly became one of the weaknesses. One of the desalination methods is the Capacitive Deionization (CDI) method. This initial study aimed to determine salinity removal using a CDI reactor using a batch mode (BM) experiment. The CDI reactor dimension was 21 x 7.5 x 14 cm that was built in 7 chambers. Variation of initial salinity were 2‰ and 4‰. Besides that, the voltage was variated, i.e. 2 V and 12 V, and the exposure time was 0, 5, 10, and 15 min. The salinity parameter was measured using the conductivity parameter. The conductivity was measured using a conductivity meter. The electrode used the carbon active with a cylinder shape. The results showed that the higher voltage could reduce higher salinity. It was 118 μS/cm2 at initial salinity of 4‰ with an exposure time of 15 min in batch. In conclusion, a CDI reactor can be used to produce fresh water.
