Abstract

Optimization of system operation that involves hydrothermal power plant in areas with two seasons can be performed by using multistage algorithms. Firstly, it uses optimization status of hydro power plant with simplex method for 24 hours operation planning. Secondly, it uses optimization merit order method to switch-off power plant unit that has high operating costs from the electrical system. After selecting hydro power plants ready to operate and thermal power plant units selected to be kept active, optimization with the interior point method can be performed to obtain minimum operation costs. The results of optimization shows that the hydro power plants with limited water flowing to the reservoir in dry season, will operate close to their rated capacities and they will be shut-down when the load demands become low. The simulation shows also that in rainy season the operating cost becoming cheaper compared to that in dry season.
