Abstract

Monitoring toxic biogenic amines is one of the critical aspects of food quality. Microfluidic paper analytical devices (µPADs) are promising for monitoring biogenic amines because they offer low cost, analyze in a short time, and require a simple operation. In this work, we demonstrated the utilization of fluorescent organic nanocrystal (NCs), 3-(2-benzothiazolyl)-4-hydroxy-benzenesulfonic acid (BHB), immobilized on µPADs for histamine detection. By controlling the pH using phosphate buffer pH 7.6, BHB NCs showed good selectivity to histamine over other biogenic amines. By applying a proper volume of aqueous sample solution, BHB NCs show an obvious color change even at a low ppm level which is possible to detect the histamine in a real sample application.
