Software Defined Modem for Interconnection of Terrestrial and Underwater Acoustics Network

Abstract

Underwater acoustic characteristics have many challenges in the development of underwater acoustic communication systems, such as multipath propagation and signal attenuation. Underwater communication requires the transmission of measurement data obtained from underwater sensors and needs to be sent to a base station on land. This research aims to develop a software-based underwater acoustic modem and integrate it with terrestrial networks. The system uses a Raspbery Pi for signal processing and data transmission from underwater to a MySQL database that a server on terrestrial can access. The research method used is prototype testing, which is carried out in a test tank to evaluate the performance of signal processing and data transmission. Pre-testing verified that MySQL can be used for data transmission and storage under public access enabled through database. The result of this research is that the system can be used to send data from the Raspbery Pi to the database, the database can be accessed, and the characters in the signal that can be received are diverse. Prototype testing shows that the database can be accessed by the public when the Raspbary Pi is connected via LAN and Wi-Fi.
