Abstract
Recent technological advances and COVID-19 pandemic have shifted consumer behavior from direct shopping to online shopping. This shift has led to a significant increase in package delivery volumes, resulting in negative impacts such as higher CO2 emissions in urban areas. The advancement of drone technology has introduced a promising alternative for last-mile delivery through a joint method involving both drones and trucks. This study addresses the two-echelon vehicle routing problem with drones (2E VRP-D), adopting a bi-objective approach: minimizing both the total arrival time of trucks at the depot and the CO2 emissions produced. A metaheuristic approach is employed to handle large problem instances. Initial solutions are generated by clustering customers based on their locations using the k-means algorithm. Subsequently, the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is applied to solve the bi-objective optimization problem, as no single solution can simultaneously optimize all objectives in such cases. The innovative use of truck-drone collaboration has the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency of last-mile delivery operations.
