Abstract

The development of active anode material derived from Southeast Celebes with chitosan-PVA binder is one of the alternatives to change the graphite anode on Lithium ion batteries. Anode is composed by hematite that is extracted from the dissolution of natural iron sand with strong acid and chitosan is derived from shrimp shell waste. The composition of the active material, binder, and conductive material on the anode were varied 57.14: 28.56: 20 and 60: 20: 20 (%w/w), respectively. Characterizations using FTIR, XRD, and SEM were conducted to determine physical properties of extracted material. Performance tests on the anodes that have been assembled in lithium ion batteries included EIS, CV, and CD. The optimal composition is 60:20:20 (%w/w) with EIS and CD results of 1069 Ω and 420 mAh/g, repectively. The CV results have shown a reduction potential at 0.503 V and an oxidation potential of 1.803 V. The local iron sand of Southeast Sulawesi can be used as a source of the active material on the anode.
