Abstract
Structural fatigue is a critical factor that influences a ship's operational lifespan and safety. As the vessel ages, its structural strength gradually deteriorates due to cyclic loads from cargo and ocean waves. If not properly addressed, these repeated loads can cause material cracking and eventually lead to structural failure. The ship analyzed in this study is over 20 years old, making a structural strength evaluation necessary to determine its remaining fatigue life. To estimate the ship’s fatigue life, a spectral-based fatigue method is employed using wave data from the past 10 years. The analysis is carried out under two loading conditions: full load and empty load, by considering eight wave heading directions. The frequency range used spans from 0.1 to 1.8 rad/s, in accordance with the recommendations of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The wave heading angles range from -180° to 180°, with 45° intervals. The calculation results show that the total fatigue life of the ship in its current condition, under combined loading scenarios, is estimated to be 6 years.
