Abstract

In power distribution system, a proper protection takes important role for maintaining system reliability in the high level. This matter could be achieved if the protection coordination system is working properly with appropriate relay setting. Each relay has their own setting for specific fault location which later had to be coordinated with other relay in order to localize the occurring fault. Somehow, this coordination term is still becoming an issue to adjust the upstream or downstream trip. Based on that matter, this paper discusses about the application of non-standard tripping characteristic curve method in relay. In comparison of the common relay characteristic, this method has advantage in faster operating time which leads to faster CB tripping time. Furthermore, this characteristic curve has different form due to basically different equation used in the relay. Based on the simulation result of during application of proposed method on PT. PLN (Ltd) APJ Gilimanuk plant, the operating time of relay results could improve faster compared to the conventional relays and help the plant to maintain the reliability index.
