Study of users’ participation factor in e-cigarette waste management in Surabaya City

The increase in the prevalence of e-cigarette users will be in line with an increase in the amount of e-cigarette waste (ECW). The use of e-cigarettes is a general hazardous waste and requires a plan to properly manage ECW. This study is necessary to describe the factors influencing the management of ECW. Study on user participation factors expected to be a reference in planning ECW management strategies. This research was conducted by surveying several e-cigarette users in Surabaya, with an estimated total of 28.958. The survey was designed based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, which is commonly used to describe behaviors. The questionnaire included several instruments related to knowledge about ECW and the main factors of the theory of planned behavior. Correlations between variables were analyzed using the Statistical, Product, and Service Solution software. The results indicate that users have high knowledge about ECW and how to handle it. Knowledge weakly forms attitudes toward behavior (rs = 0,253) and Perceived Behavioral Control (rs = 0,221) but does not yet form respondents’ subjective norms (Sig: 0,063 > 0,05). Intention was strongly formed by attitudes toward behavior (rs = 0,627) and Perceived Behavioral Control (rs = 0,665), and weakly form by Subjective Norm (rs = 0,362). It is recommended that specific regulations be established to govern the management of ECW to encourage better handling of ECW. Additionally, a centralized waste management program is needed to make users’ easier to properly dispose of ECW.
