N2 - The production of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) play an important role in many orthopedic surgery as the main compound for bone cements. Synthesis of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) was produced by suspension polymerization. Purified Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator was added to the reactor after the heating process reaches a temperature of 85oC where Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and water homogenized first. Due to the use of PMMA products in medical field, it is desirable to use non-toxic solvents for the purification process. PMMA purified by removing impurities MMA, BPO, and PVA with a sequent solvent of water, and a mixture of ethanol and water with 1:1 ratio. Then, PMMA powder filtered and dried. Characterization of PMMA product resulted molecular weight of 512x103 Da with particle size 77.256 μm, glass transition temperature (Tg) of 119.15oC, and compressive strength 80.12 MPa.
