Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive technoeconomic evaluation for the potential implementation of floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems integrated with diesel generators in the isolated grid of Barrang Lompo Island, Indonesia. The island's current energy system relies exclusively on diesel generators operating only 12 hours daily, creating a critical need for sustainable, continuous power solutions. Using HOMER Pro software, this research compares two scenarios: an exclusively diesel-based generation model (Model 1) and a hybrid diesel-FPV model (Model 2). The analysis reveals significant economic advantages in adopting the hybrid approach. Specifically, the hybrid system reduces the Net Present Cost (NPC) by approximately 14.7%, from Rp150 billion in Model 1 to Rp128 billion in Model 2, despite an initial capital expenditure of Rp19.8 billion. Additionally, annual operating and maintenance costs are lowered by around 27.8%, decreasing from Rp10.5 billion to Rp7.58 billion. From an environmental standpoint, Model 2 demonstrates a substantial reduction in emissions, notably cutting annual carbon dioxide output by roughly 34.4% from 1,415,955 kg to 928,284 kg. These findings confirm that integrating FPV technology offers an economically viable and environmentally sustainable solution for isolated island power systems facing similar energy challenges.
