Abstract
Marine biofouling can be a continuous problem requiring high maintenance and cleaning costs. An antifouling coating is needed to protect the static and movable marine structures from minimizing the effect of damaging marine biofouling growth. Copper and biocide-based antifouling coatings are widely applied to control biofouling, but these coatings contain toxic substances in marine environments. At the same time, environmentally friendly and efficient antifouling coating is unavailable. On the other hand, the extract of the terrestrial plant as an active ingredient demonstrates antifouling properties and appears to be a promising antifoulant material. Therefore, this mini-review discusses recent trends in the research and development of plant-based antifouling coating and assesses some advantages and challenges of developing this antifouling coating. This study is aimed to bring up to date the current circumstances of plant-based antifouling coating research to scientists and engineers.
