The identification and observation of star constellations using virtual reality and Google card board

Abstract

Star constellation can be defined as a set of stars that is associated with mythological characters or creatures or earthbound animals or objects. Stars constellations can be used to help the navigation, cultivation, and zodiac. The constellation of Orion is fully visible when winter is coming soon. The constellation of Summer Triangle can be used to know when Summer and Spring come. These kinds of stars constellations can be used by farmers to help them to plan when the beginning of the growing season. There is also the North Star that is used for navigation or many other stars constellations. Because of the air pollution, the stars constellation become more difficult to be seen. Besides, the lighting structure in the city makes the star constellation cannot be seen clearly. There is Stellarium application that can be used to show exactly what is seen in the sky. This application can be an alternative way to enjoy the night sky. This paper implements the Virtual Reality (VR) technology to develop an innovative application to identify and observe the star constellation. In this research, Google Card Board is used as an additional device in VR technology. This research aims to explore the VR technology in developing an innovative Stellarium application.
