Abstract

Based on data released through the Fourth International Maritime Organization (IMO) Study in 2020, tankers are the type of ship with the most fuel consumption. The use of a hybrid generator system by combining diesel and photovoltaic (PV) generators, moreover by reconfiguring the AC power system to DC is one of the considerations to overcome these problems. However, the use of such reconfiguration on ships, especially with the non-electric propulsion system is still rarely done so that research is still needed to investigate the transient stability of the system. This study aims to investigate the transient stability of the electrical distribution system in a ship when the conventional AC distribution is converter to the DC with the addition of the PV as the hybrid power sources with the diesel generators. This research is conducted based on a simulation with power system simulator software. The simulation is carried out based on a case study by applying a three-phase fault to a bus with large electrical load. The simulation results show that in the AC distribution system, the voltage and frequency responses are at a stable value according to the referenced standard. However, after reconfiguration into a DC distribution system, in some cases, the voltage response shows unstable response. To overcome this instability, stage 2 reconfiguration is done by dividing and arranging the bus into several parts to achieve a stable response. After stage 2 of reconfiguration, the unstable response was resolved.
