Abstract

Blood cancer is an abnormal growth in white blood cells that causes the body to be too weak to fight infection. Blood cancer is included in liquid cancer, so it quickly spreads to other organs of the body. An alternative treatment for leukemia can be done with photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT shows significantly lower toxic side effects because photosensitizer (PS) accumulates in significantly higher concentrations in cancer cells than in normal cells. The PS used in this study is made from natural ingredients, namely turmeric through an extraction process by maceration method. Through the manufacture of PS through turmeric extraction produces a turmerone with a maximum absorbance wavelength of 400-500 nm. These results provide a potential PS for blood cancer treatment using PDT from the natural ingredient turmeric.
