Vegetation Characteristics and the Estimation of Above-Ground Biomass and Carbons Stock in Petengoran Mangrove Forest, Lampung Bay, Indonesia

Abstract

Mangrove is an important blue carbon ecosystem that plays a significant role in mitigating climate change. They are known for their ability to absorb and store atmospheric carbon into the biomass. In this study, the above-ground biomass, carbon stock, and the relationship between vegetation characteristic (density and canopy coverage) and carbon stock are examined. Allometric equations were used to obtain carbon stock values in four zones of Petengoran Mangrove Forest. Three species were identified at the research site. The order of their contribution to the overall carbon stock was Rhizophora apiculata > Rhizophora mucronata > Sonneratia alba. The average above-ground biomass obtained was 114.616 t/ha, while the carbon stock was 53.870 t C/ha. It was also seen that different density and canopy coverage in each zone contributed to regional variations in the value of the carbon stock, demonstrating that the characteristics of vegetation affect the values of the carbon stocks.
